Vouliagmeni Lake – Heraion

Vouliagmeni Lake - Heraion

For all the fans of the sea, the fantastic "Vouliagmeni" lake is an excellent option, only 16 kilometers northwest of Loutraki. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful greek lagoons. "Eschatiotis", as it was called in antiquity, is a scenery of special appeal, decorated by a natural pine forest. Its dimensions are 2 kilometers in length, 1 kilometer in width, and 40 meters of depth.

This little "blue lagoon" is right next to the sea and it "communicates" with it through a narrow water corridor. This region, although touristically developed, still retains its scenic character and just takes us away with its colorful and peaceful environment. You are definitely going to be tempted to swim in its crystal waters and then enjoy your lunch in one of the traditional restaurants of the area.

But before you start your plunges, it is advised that you carry on for two more kilometers west of the lake, through the dense pine forest and reach the Heraion / Melagkavi cape were you will visit an important sanctuary of the ancient world, dedicated to the goddess Hera. Archaeological surveys have traced the worship of Hera all the way back to the 9th century B.C. when the first Heraion temple was built. Today, one of the larger and more spectacular lighthouses of the Corinthian Gulf guides the ships there, only a short walk away from Heraion.
